[The English Language
according to Ivan the cat]

Ivan — me.

Kira — my sister, the other cat.

cat — my last name. It's Kira's last name, too.

kitty — my middle name. Kira's middle name, too.

Matt — my person. I don't think I know his other names.

food — what I eat. It's in the blue sack.

chicken — the best kind of food. Kira is really loud about it, but I am more proud than that.

water — the wet stuff. I like to drink it and put my hand in it, but I don't like it on the rest of me. [see bath]

milk — the white wet stuff, that is really good to drink. Whenever Matt has a glass in his hand, I usually check to see if it's milk.

good — what I am when Matt is happy with me.

bad — what I am when Matt is not happy with me.

no — what Matt says when I am bad.

ow – what Matt says when something hurts him. If we are playing a game [see box (2)], I know to stop to make sure he's okay.

brush — when Matt rubs my hair with the thing from the drawer.

love — when I am happy with Matt.

hug — how I show love to Matt. I usually do this by running up to him and standing up on my hind legs, with my hands on his waist. Kira is still learning how to do this, but I do it better.

out — getting to go through the door to see the world.

in, inside — when there's no more time for out.

home — where I live.

new home — where I live now, after the fire in the old home.

bath — getting in the water. Matt likes this. I don't.

vacuum — the loud thing. Matt tells me about it so I can hide. It is scarier than water.

box — 1. square things to stand on, walk around, open up, crawl into, or poo in. 2. game I play with Matt, where I try to hit his hands before they touch my nose.

ring — bright round thing that comes from milk. This is my favorite toy. I bat it with my hand, or carry it in my mouth.

spot — the game I play when Matt shines the little red light on the floor and I chase it. I'm very good at this. If I can't find the light, I know to look at Matt's hand to see where it is pointing.

bed — when Matt goes to sleep, and it's time to sleep on his feet.
