Sam
After a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day of corporate reorgs, frustrating budgets, a supreme feeling of exhaustion, and several other unnameable experiences (which pretty much characterized the week over all), I came home to find "Summer of Sam" in my mailbox (courtesy of my friends at netflix.com).

I read an online comment several days back, about another movie or book, which said that the most interesting works were those that people either love or hate, because you never know where you're going to stand, and whichever side you find yourself on (love or hate), you really cherish the feeling. This movie definitely fit the bill.

Sure the language was bad. Sure some of the characters begged judgment from the audience. I found it to be a thoroughly interesting movie, though closer to P. T. Anderson's stuff than anything Spike Lee. Serial killer movie? No. Great character study? Yes, it is.

Regardless, it amazes me. I look through the Netflix comments, and every single comment is either a 5 or a 1. Nothing in between. Some of the comments really surprise me, too. Racist? Yeah, the Italians in the movie weren't too keen on their black neighbors, but that doesn't mean the movie as a whole is racist does it? I don't get people sometimes.

Oh well — for a second week in a row, it's only 9 pm on a Friday, and I'm absolutely beat, so it's bedtime for Matt.
