Symposium
You know, sometimes, you wonder what it's all about.

Does each individual have a soulmate, which he or she spends an entire lifetime seeking out? Or maybe it's all about the statistics, the numbers — if the square root of the sum of the squares is greater than the mean, you're in business, and love happens.

Or maybe it's just blind faith. "I've had enough — it's time to settle for someone, and she'll do just fine."

I don't know.

I constantly weigh out my various interests and options, which are never all that many (interests or options), but enough to keep me occupied, and I wonder, am I missing something? Is there something about A or B that I haven't quite noticed, but under a fluorescent light, the answer glows obvious? Or is there a D – none of the above? Or even a write-in candidate?

I don't know that, either.

I'd have to say I'm more bored than lonely. I miss what it's like to really make someone happy, or to surprise her with an unexpected gift, or to hold her close when the rest of the world has been so cruel. That's what I miss.

Lately the world hasn't offered up many people I'm willing to go that distance for.

Until lately.

And I'm not quite sure what to do about it, honestly. . . .
