I was awoken at 6:30am by Ivan, who decided that it was a bright sunny morning, and he needed breakfast immediately. I told him to go back to sleep.
Minutes later, he alternately batted a box around, pulled the paper out of my computer printer tray, rattled a bag with some socks in it, and scraped around on the carpet, all while expectantly looking my direction. (The carpet scraping is a new trick, because he's realized it makes me think he's just peed on it, and I wake up immediately).
When my alarm came on to the tune of NPR Morning Edition telling me the news, I opened my eyes to find his face about 3 inches away from mine, staring me down.
"Okay, okay," I relented. "Breakfast it is."
So I stumbled sleepily into the kitchen and measured out a handful of food into Ivan's bowl, while he anxiously wove figure-eights through my legs. His face went into the bowl immediately.
I returned to the bedroom to take care of some things on the computer, and, what would you know, Ivan is immediately behind me.
He can't have eaten more than eight pieces of food in that time.
This can't have been all that remains of the pressing hunger that's been causing him to do his best to wake me up for nearly two hours.
