Mystery Solved
The sound I've been hearing all week is the sound of acorns falling from a relatively tall oak tree next door onto the covered parking awning of the adjoining apartment complex.

I know this because I tremendous storm just rolled in, and instead of hiding inside like I should have been, I was running out into it so I could now find the source of the racket, which, at the time, instigated by the storm's high winds, had become a continuous like a tommygun from an old gangster flick. To serve my utter wonder at how a covered parking awning could make a noise that loud because of something as small as an acorn, I picked up several from the ground and tossed them onto the awning myself.

RAT-A-TAT. RAT-A-TAT-TAT.

I thought I'd been shot.

Well, not really, but immediately upon turning around a very large branch broke out of a tree and landed on the street in front of my front door, so I deemed it a good time to go back inside.
