Cat Rations
I was worried that the cat might have run out of food, since I was late getting home.

"Will he be okay?" she had asked.

Of course he'll be okay, I thought. Missing a meal or two could actually do him some good, and besides, he's always been pretty resourceful in the past about finding something to eat.

Of course, in the past, there was always something nice and cat-palatable sitting around that he could easily get to: the bag of cat food, a package of cat treats, potato chips, dried squid. Not always healthy, but something that would do in a pinch.

Unfortunately, this time, the only thing he decided looked tasty was a plastic bag of powdered milk.

He had dumped the powdered milk out in ziggurat-like mounds throughout the apartment. And licked calderas of powder out of the top of them. And vomited a viscous milky froth up on each of the three throw rugs.

One day I'll learn. . . .
